Surf Coast Candles – Reflecting the everchanging ambiance of the Great Ocean Road beaches
Jean Hay loves travelling. She also loves bringing along scented candles to create a cosy feel to wherever she stays on her travels.
In her search for the perfect candle to pack for her getaways, Jean realised there was nothing available to match the vibes of Victoria’s famous Surf Coast. It was from there she decided to create her own range of handmade travel candles.
Turning an idea into a business
After undertaking a candle-making course, Jean left a career in telecommunications to pursue her creative passion. She established Surf Coast Candles in 2014 with a collection of fresh and inviting scents inspired by her love of beaches, especially those along the Great Ocean Road.
Presented in beautifully designed glass jars with etched timber lids, her soy candle range includes travel favourites for all seasons and occasions. Coconut Lime Punch for summer holidays. French Pear for winter retreats. Cucumber, Ginger and Mint to invigorate. Vintage Vanilla with white jasmine and sandalwood for relaxation.
Based in Torquay, Surf Coast Candles is a family affair. Jean’s husband, Gordon, her two sons and daughter-in-law all help with the business in producing and delivering the candles. Her youngest son designed the brand’s distinctive waves and reef logo. And her studio is the go-to place for nieces and nephews keen to be involved. It can be a hive of activity with Jean also employing two young staff members, Jasmin and Riva-Grace, to help meet a growing demand for her products.
Local beaches continue to inspire
This year, Jean will unveil her latest collection titled Seaflora. Fragrances will again reflect the changing moods of her beloved Surf Coast.
The candles are exquisitely presented in packaging featuring the intricate seaweed patterns found on local beaches drawn by Torquay artist and designer Narelle Craven. The Darriwill Farm Highton shop will be among the first to stock the new range in coming months.
In the meantime, when not relishing her role as head candle maker, you will find Jean exploring the many beaches between Geelong and the 12 Apostles for further motivation and ideas.
And Jean’s own favourite candle for when she ventures to places farther afield? She says it’s the refreshing and uplifting fragrance of Sweet Lemongrass. A scent that truly represents the vibrancy of the Surf Coast.
